While most of the work for Project A34K went into the visuals, and the lions share to visual effects, there was a little work I felt could be done to enhance the audio experience at points as well. There are quite a few sound effects I felt could be improved along the way after the dozens of rewatches of the film to make the Legacy Cut. A splash of water here, a hiss of steam there. A lot of the sound effects for the opening credits had to be recreated as it was cut down and rearranged. A few Xenomorph sound effects have been replaced as well. Namely, the footsteps as the Alien is walking on the ceiling, as it follows Ripley and Dillon into the mold, and the sound of its head cracking when the water hits at the end.
The most notable additions to the sound are in two specific places.
The Xenomorph is now a lot more audible, which I feel is more in keeping with the film's predecessors. I've added about thirty new sound effects including hisses, snarls and roars. These sound effects were sourced mostly from the 2014 video game 'Alien: Isolation', with the pitch heightened to better match the Xenomorph in Alien ³. I've also added running effects to compliment the chase scenes in the lead works.
The second notable change to audio is the re-scoring of a specific scene.
Elliot Goldenthal's haunting score is one of the defining features of Alien ³. It's so rich and atmospheric it's basically a character unto itself. The score is almost flawless in my opinion, only dropping the ball in one part of the film, and that is the scene where Ripley is assaulted by four of the prisoners in the Fury 161 scrap yard.
It's a tense and harrowing scene, and I always felt the heavy rock music just didn't fit the tone. It's like something from an action scene, and an action scene in a different movie at that. I've re-scored the scene with music I feel is more in keeping with the weight of what we see on screen. The tracks I've used to build this new score are 'First Attack', 'Clemens Dies', 'It’s Started Pt. 2', and 'More Bait and Chase' from the official soundtrack.
